Never shall I say another bad word about a donkey , not that I have done that so much, but the saying “Stubborn as a donkey”, has got a different meaning to me, after I have been here in Jayyous some weeks and got to know my colleague David Mitchell from Scotland(!) - and his knowledge about donkeys!
David says that donkeys are very smart animals, much smarter than horses, as they don’t let anyone dictate them, but estimates its own limits! A horse take orders from human beings! Every morning for about 6 weeks now, we have been to the agricultural gates in Jayyous, and the donkeys are strong and persistant, and can pull a chart with 2-4 people in, and they come silently down the hills to the North Gate, about 10-15 of them every day in the olive season, and they are really nice animals, and the colours can be white/grey or brown. How does David know so much about donkeys, you wonder??
He has had one in his own garden in Oban in Scotland for many years!! together with other animals.
Why do so many of the farmers here in Jayyous have a donkey? For the first the costs are not very high; they cannot afford to buy a tractor, most of the tractors coming noisily down the hill, are almost my age, I hear from the owners here, from the 1950s, and need a lot of mending and repair. Most people would never have enough money to buy a new one, so donkeys will be the working tool they need. Secondly the donkies are easy to please and just needs to be tied up for the night with some food and water. They are strong and can carry heavy burdens, and they are faithful companions even if their owners beat them to move quicker….. and they have a wonderful smile;
Look how happy he is to see you.
And the wonderful song, keeping us awake half the night, as they are standing around every corner waiting for a new and exciting working day with their families on their land, is just charming. Together with the sheep next door its like a choir when also some of the cocks in the village join in. Several of the donkeys have had baby donkeys the last month, and these babies are like other babies, irresistibly sweet with long eyelashes and curly hair, and unsteady legs. We think it’s a bit brutal to let them stay just on stones and concrete, but see what we learnt at the homepage David put our attention to http://www.thedonkeysanctuary.org.uk/rescue, : They should not stand on grass because their claws will not be able to move in the grass!! And the claws need to be looked after.
So, donkeys are valuable animals to farmers not only here, but around the whole world, so one could sing; "donkeys are a farmers best friend", I guess. I have been convinced..
